Pozo de las Ánimas

It is located 67 km from the city of Malargüe on Route 222.

In this unique landscape you can see two sinkholes that were eroded by underground rivers, creating green water mirrors with almost 300 meters in diameter each.

Some call it Trolope-Co or water of the screaming, in the Mapuche language, its name is the protagonist of several legends that have passed down through the history of rural inhabitants from generation to generation. Admission is free and you will also find informative signs explaining these processes.

Formation process

The Pozo de las Animas is made up of two depressions, divided by a narrow gap, which is supposed to end up joining the two wells into one over the years, due to the erosion process. The size of the wells is close to 200 meters in diameter, and they are about 80 meters deep to the lake and another 20 meters deep under water. The measurements were carried out in 1981 by a team of scientists led by Rodolfo Rogelio Rocha.

This natural phenomenon has been classified as a sinkhole caused by the transformation of underground deposits of soft soils such as gypsum, which, due to the effect of the filtration of underground water tables, produce a dissolution of the soil, causing landslides and depressions in the ground, forming these large conical-shaped holes on the surface.
